Back to L.A.

Saturday 1st September, 2001

A very emotional day, especially for Gary and Scott.

We have really enjoyed our time in Cedar City, much relaxing, much fun and laughter.  It is sad to leave.

6:00am we are up early and finalise packing.  Ryan rings and we chat for 10 minutes.

7:10am Amy, Katie, Daniel, Rayls, Gary and Scott leave Cedar City and head for Vegas.  We drive through St George (still hot) and Mesquite.  Stop at Glendale and buy some parking signs.

At 9:20am (Vegas time) we arrive at Las Vegas Airport and head to the SouthWest Airlines check in. Take the light rail to C Terminal.

We get some food whilst waiting for the flight.

A very emotional farewell.  We don't want to leave.   Amy and her family have been so good to us and we don't want to say goodbye.

11:02am we board our flight.  Boeing 737-300 Flight 2208 and board at gate C21.

We back out at 11:16am and take off at 11:25am.  At 11:36am we are at 28,000 feet 160 miles from LAX.

At 11:46am we start our descent and land at 12:04pm - in the air for 39 minutes.

We get our luggage, 11 bags now.   On to the Avis Shuttle Bus and then get in a long line at the Avis Facility.  Good service thought - ladies name was Isela.  Our car is a Pontiac Grand Am - $31 a day for 2 days.  As we load the car Gary misplaces his trusty walking stick and it is never seen again.

Drive along 405 to Santa Monica Boulevard - somehow we lose Santa Monica but we manage to locate our hotel at 777 Vine Street in Hollywood.  Poor service.

After settling in we call Scott McKenzie and arrange to meet him tomorrow after lunch.

We drive to the Hollywood Sign, take photos.

Head back into Hollywood. Buy lunch at In/Out Burgers on Sunset Boulevard and walk up Orange  to Hollywood Boulevarde.  Check out the walk of fame and Mann's Chinese Theater.  See impersonaters of Crocodile Dundee, Batman, Wonder Woman and Elvis.  Buy Scott a Dallas Cowboys cap and Rayls gets a teddy bear.

Back to the hotel and Gary wonders across the road for Subway.  Owner has a friend in Perth.

We talk to Ryan in Perth and Amy who was now back in Cedar City.

Everyone is very tired and emotional after a long day and from leaving Amy and Cedar City.

Sunday 2nd September, 2001

Our last day in the USA.

At 8:30am we are packed and in the car.

Drive down Santa Monica Boulevard to Rodeo Drive and check out Berley Hills.

Back onto Santa Monica and to the Pacific Ocean and check out Pal Aisades Beach and north up to Malibu.   Gary makes the effort to climb down some rocks to touch the ocean and collects 3 small rocks.

Past Santa Monica Beach and the amusement pier and then inland to a fabric store for Rayls.

We are all a bit down today, our last day in the US.

To Century City, check out Bloomingdales, Macys, Card Fever.  Rayls buys a purple top at Macys.

Then we drive to the McDonalds near Scott McKenzie's house.

At 2:00pm we arrive at Scott's house and have a pleasant chat.  Scott signs the bear we bought at Tysons Corner all those days ago.

At 3:45pm we say goodbey to Scott McKenzie and intend to drive to the nearby Dodger Stadium but soon realise there is a game on and traffic is heavy so we we by pass it  and drive to the Greek Theater.  Scott managed to climb to the top of the hill to get phoots and has an interesting slide down.

We then take 101 to 110 to 10 and 405 to get back to Avis at LAX and return the car - shuttle bus to airport.

At the airport at 6:00pm, long lines.  Checked out some shops, McDonalds and then through security.  Exchange $US43 into 25 UK pounds.

Our flight is British Airways flight BA268.  we board the plane at 8:20pm and take off at 8:45pm.
