Dallas

Saturday 29th March, 2008

Today we thought we might head back to the Buddy Holly Statue and gravesite because the photos were not that great due to the afternoon shade. However, today is overcast and so no point going back.

So we turned up at the Buddy Holly Center at 10:00am and spent an hour looking around. Quite a nice spot. No photos allowed, that was a bummer.

By noon we were on the road for Dallas. My health was going downhill fast but we managed to make it through Abilene and through Fort Worth, where we checked out Lee Harvey Oswald's gravetsite, before it was onto Dallas where we arrived around 5:30pm.

As soon as were in our room Gary went straight to bed and soon after started vomiting. In desperation Rayls contacted a doctor through the hotel reception and he arrived around 11pm and did a very thorough examination he didn't leave till 12:45am. Turns out that I now have bronchitis (slight chance of pneumonia) and he gave me some injections and antibiotics. I then slept till 4pm and started the slow road to recovery.

The doctors name was Dr Richard Bixby and he was really very good and rang twice on the following mornings to see how things were going.

Sunday 30th March

Today was a dead loss.

I slept till 4pm and Rayls read and watched TV.

Around 9pm we wandered to the iHop just 2 doors from the hotel and tried a light meal.

Back to the hotel.

So here we are one week into the trip and things are looking up health wise.

Although I didn't sleep well we managed to check out of our hotel around 9am. We had a local Wal-Mart on the GPS, we followed the directions and ended up in an industrial area with no sign of a Wal-Mart.

So it was on to Dealey Plaza, the site where President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. We had been here previously in 2001. Today we spent an hour or so wandering around the area and then checked out the store of the Sixth Floor Museum - spent some dollars here.

Then we tried to locate the site where Jack Ruby shot Lee Harvey Oswald - we found the building but couldn't access the basement area. Then to the site of the shooting of Officer JD Tippit by Lee Harvey Oswald. After this we went to the house where Lee Harvey Oswald had the backyard photo taken and finally we headed for Laurel Land Cemetery and the site of the JD Tippit grave - yeah, yeah, we know we go to lots of gravesites.

Then it was onto I20 as we headed for South Carolina - we have changed our plans due to my illness and have decided to head straight for Jim and Bette's house in Greenwood, South Carolina.

We had hoped to make the 200 miles to Shreveport but only made it as far as Kilgore still in Texas. For dinner we went to a Cracker Barrel Restaurant - we both ate light, Rayls had chicken, I had fish - including side dishes and drinks it came to $19.02 - bargain.

Now we watch TV with tornado warning being flashing across the screen, but they appear a few hundred miles away so we should be OK.
